If there’s one thing I absolutely love in the handmade business world, it’s when people combine heritage techniques and equipment with a totally modern sense of style and design. Enter Jeff Macklin of Jackson Creek Press. Jeff creates ‘Genuine old-school letterpress, using wood/lead type and blocks’, that he carves himself. For all you printing enthusiasts out there, Jackson Creek Press uses a FAG Standard TP550 proofing press and an 1890 Ben Frankin Gordon platen press for all their work. Everything is hand printed, either hand cranked or foot treadled. How cool is that?!?
- Cory Doctorow Letterpress Print: Cory Doctorow (http://craphound.com) – a rising Canadian star – currently living in London, UK. He’s an acclaimed author, blogger (http://boingboing.net/) and internet advocate. As far as modern day Canadians, i can think of few more deserving of immortalization in genuine letterpress ink. Here, a carved block illustration and genuine hand-set wood type form the basis of this limited edition print.
- Service Berry Two Colour Block Print: This hand printed piece is derived from a hand carved block, printed overtop an impression from an antique wood block – grain showing through. The carved block is a dark brown, while the background woodgrain is a light sky blue.
- Words Express Ideas, Letterpress Poster: Words Express Ideas – Ideas Bring Change: A great poster for motivation, encouragement and inspiration. This poster uses sans serif wood type as a background, and various wood type
in making up the message. This was created with vintage wood type, and when you hold this poster in your hands, you can feel the impression.
