I’m Issuing a Challenge…
Okay folks, I promise I will not bug you too much on IndieNorth with news about the Lounge of Commerce, but this is really too big a deal for everybody for me not to say something.
I asked everyone to fill out this survey the other day, to get a feel for the things we most need to work on in order to improve our small businesses.
So far, the response to the survey has been fabulous, and I really appreciate the time everyone is taking to help me out.
So…here’s the thing.
So far, 85 flippin’ percent of you have cited Facebook Apps, Quizzes and Games as one of the top 3 reasons you don’t think your business is going as well as it should.
85%!!!!!!!!
Here’s the challenge, and I know you can do it.
Go to your facebook page. Right Now. Turn off all your useless gaming apps. Then, go join the “Remove Your Apps” Group and spread the word.
I’m not saying get rid of Facebook. Facebook is an invaluable tool for keeping in touch with friends and family, not to mention for business networking. It just breaks my heart to see something so silly and unproductive as a fake farm, town, cafe or flippin’ mafia get in the way of your success. Not to mention the utterly asinine “What Early Century Piece of Furniture Are You” quizzes that just make me twitch whenever I see that someone has wasted 6 minutes of their precious life filling it out.
Join me for a month. I never ad apps, and believe it or not, I rarely get bored.

totally agreed. i happily discovered you can block people from sending you those annoying invitations to apps too. us busy artists need all the time we can get!
Love the challenge Beth! You know I hate facebook for many reasons, but the main one being that most apps and other things on there have nasty viruses in them. I can’t tell you how many things my firewall and virus alerts have caught from facebook. My hubby is addicted to it, so I need a top notch security system on my PC for all the crap we get off facebook.
I personally see no point to FB anymore. Twitter is my way of updating friends and also Tweeting about my biz. It brings in way more traffic without all the viruses and other nasties that FB has. Sometimes we just have to say enough is enough and focus on which apps or social networking sites really work, and FB is not one of them in my opinion. I never got a sale from FB when I did use it, even with a business page etc… I get way more from Twitter and my own advertising efforts.
Just something for others to maybe consider when using FB. It just is not very productive for business purposes.
Oh exactly! I block them too. I was actually getting angry every time I saw a new ‘invite’. Blocking saves me so much aggrevation!
Those virusses are a doozy!
I agree actually, that twitter seems to be the way to go for business advertising. I don’t hate facebook, in fact I use the IndieNorth page to update things that I wouldn’t bother doing a full post on here.
I also use it to keep in touch with friends and family., since we’re spread so thin across the globe. I just draw the line at ridiculous time wasters!
he he… Haven’t done any of them beyond playing a few rounds of Scramble (Boggle, a game I play offline too) on lunch break. But I tend to block the invites and it winnows down the trickle of App spam.

I jumped on the Farmtown or ville wagon but soon jumped off, I’m proud to say. Guess I’m just a city girl!
This is great advice Beth! Thank you!
I am constantly ignoring or trying to block them….how is it you do that….it drives me crazy too…i don’t care if your cow needs hay….I am busy trying to figure out how to add someone as a friend to my business page without having it go to my profile…you know….I only have music on my profile and it’s eclectic and keeps me focused on my crafting work….oh, but I do have facebook simply to check on the adult children, otherwise think I’d be doing it all on Twitter….by the way i’m sparetimedesign there if you wanted to know..lol
Have I joined?
