A whimsical dose of Spring from WildWomanJewelery

  1. “The Mermaid who loved shoes” Bracelet:  The Mermaid Who Loves Shoes tells the story of my interest in the mystique of mermaids and my passion for shoes. The variety of beads and mixture of blues, browns, turquoise, pinks and shimmery waves of color on the shells capture my vision of a beautiful mermaid’s tail. Seed pearls add to the ‘bottom of the ocean’ mood. Sterling silver charms of a mermaid, a pump, slingback and sand dollars with which to make her purchases complete the tale. Can you hear this mermaid singing?
  2. “Just a Little Bit Retro” Pink Lucite Earrings:  Soft angelskin pink vintage lucite hoops (approx. 25mm) frame tangerine rounds (6mm) to create this fun, retro design.
  3. “Believe” Bracelet, inspired by Alice in Wonderland:  Luminescent moonglow rose pink and matte light orange vintage lucite, hot pink and fushia acrylic, opaque and translucent glass and lucite lime greens and a touch of yellow create a ‘Mad Hatter’s’ tea party in bold bubbles of color in this design. Gorgeous lime lampwork beads topped with fuchsia glass icing are cupcakes ready to be served. Sterling silver charms – a heart that reads Queen, a tea service, a top hat, a rabbit, a spiral and a charm that reads ‘Believe’ create the message.
  4. “Night Fever” Earrings:  ok…I know…the late 70′s…disco, Saturday Night Fever, big hair, the Beegees…although I tend to be drawn to designs, music and the culture of the 50′s and 60′s, I was actually part of the disco generation (blushing). Like a disco ball in the center of the dance floor, these faceted light reflecting hoops and beads were just irresistible to me!

Upcycle for a good cause with Tawny Bee!!!

I have been keeping track of Tawny’s awesome projects for Upcycle for Heart and Stroke, and I’m so excited to share them with you!  There is really something for everybody.  (How cute is “Devo the Found objects Robot”, seen in the top left corner of the picture?).  As for me, I’m really eyeballing that awesome Blossom Hat, like the one Tawny is wearing in the picture.  So fun!

Here’s T awny to tell you about “Upcycle for Heart and Stroke”

HI I’m Tawny.  I run a little business called Tawny Bee here in Winnipeg.  February is a very special month for me, and it’s not because of Valentine’s Day.

I was born with a heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot.  When I was 3 years old, I had open heart surgery and went into complete heart block. I need a pacemaker now to keep my heart beating. Thanks to the support of my parents, family and friends and the work of the wonderful doctors in Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg, I am happy and healthy today at 33. And yes, I have 2 children!

I have no doubt in my mind that the research and advocacy of the Canadian Heart and Stoke Foundation has played a big role in the betterment of my life and the lives of others like me.

So now it’s time to use my talents to give back. I have come up with Project Upcycle for Heart and Stroke to coincide with Heart Month here in Canada.

- for each day in February (or as many as I can possibly handle) I will take something and “upcycle” it into something else. Afterall, I am sort of upcylced myself aren’t I? Made of a few spare parts here and there. Many of my fellow heart patients understand what I’m talking about. Many have pacemakers, shunts, new valves, even whole new hearts!
- I will put my new creation up for sale in my Etsy shop (Tawny Bee)
- Half the proceeds (minus shipping) of each product will be donated to the Heart and Stoke Foundation
- I will post a play by play of my creations on this blog and my Facebook Fanpage, so check back often!

So you might see a pair of pants turned into a lovely skirt. You might see a t-shirt turned into baby clothes. Who knows? The possibilities are endless since I’m putting my – pardon the pun – heart into it!

Fabulous Kitsch from the Tipsy Time Machine!

Just look at how awesome these vintage pieces are!  I found them over at the Tipsy Time Machine, and I’m telling you, there’s tons more there for the picking!  Go check it out…you’re sure to find something that will bring a smile to your face!

  1. Nutty Tiki Nutcracker:  Mr. Big Mouth hails from the South Seas, but he’ll travel wherever nuts need cracking. Pop a nut in his mouth, twist the screw, and voila! Tasty treats. He’s kitschy, and would fit in with tiki decor.  Carved out of wood, with painted eyes and nose, and a funky yarn hairdo. Can be seperated into two parts. Stamped with “Japan”. There is a chip on his nose, otherwise in great condition.
  2. Purple Moo Cow Sippy Straw Creamer:  What sets this vintage cow creamer apart, besides the vibrant purple colour, is the 1/4″ (7mm) hole in the back of the neck to insert a straw for sipping. It’s fun to drink milk from a purple cow!  Cute retro graphic of two children with balloons on the front, the bottom of the creamer is bright red. Made by Whirley Industries in Warren, PA. Excellent Vintage Condition.
  3. Hungry Hippo Cookie Jar:  Store your treats in this quaint little hippo wearing a red banana hat. Hand painted pink and lime flowers with green leaves adorn this anthropomorphic cutie. He is a smaller cookie jar, so he won’t hog up valuable counter space.  As you can see in the photos, there is a small amount of vintage wear to the red glaze on the banana hat lid, and his gray painted teeth. No chips or cracks.

IndieNorth Music: Nightwood

Amber Goodwyn, Erin Ross, and Jeremy MacCuish are the awesome trio making up Montreal band Nightwood. Recently releasing their first full-length album, Carta Marina is “a carefully crafted rock album teeming with oceanic themes and nautical imagery.”

To accompany the album, the band has just introduced “The Bright Girls Of Summer” video (click here) – an awesome time-lapsed recording of the Carta Marina recording process.

“The Bright Girls of Summer is the last song on Carta Marina. We hadn’t planned on making a video for it so soon, but it works beautifully with the time lapse imagery. We really like this video because it’s a neat little time capsule about how we made the record and the people who helped us along the way. We encourage you to read the lyrics right here, if that’s your kind of thing.”

No strangers to the blogosphere, the band actively manages an art/style/music blog at http://nightwoodband.com where you can find tons of interesting posts as well as Carta Marina on vinyl and mp3. You can also find them on Myspace at www.myspace.com/nightwoodband.
