Amber Goodwyn, Erin Ross, and Jeremy MacCuish are the awesome trio making up Montreal band Nightwood. Recently releasing their first full-length album, Carta Marina is “a carefully crafted rock album teeming with oceanic themes and nautical imagery.”

To accompany the album, the band has just introduced “The Bright Girls Of Summer” video (click here) – an awesome time-lapsed recording of the Carta Marina recording process.

“The Bright Girls of Summer is the last song on Carta Marina. We hadn’t planned on making a video for it so soon, but it works beautifully with the time lapse imagery. We really like this video because it’s a neat little time capsule about how we made the record and the people who helped us along the way. We encourage you to read the lyrics right here, if that’s your kind of thing.”

Montreal native Kristen Bussandri is not afraid to write songs raw with emotion and brimming with honestly. Her incredibly controlled blues-inspired vocals capture the tone of each and every experience she takes you through.

Recently invited back to perform at Rockwood Music Hall in New York, and currently working to book events in Montreal, Kristen is also planning on recording an EP this month with Dave Sturton (Jean LeLoup, Bedouin Soundclash) as well as performing at the 5th edition of WeAreWomenArtists (www.myspace.com/thewawashow) on Valentine’s Day at La Salla Rossa in Montreal.

I love discovering new music, so I was thrilled to come across the Trench Town Oddities.  Make sure you drop by their MySpace page, where you can check out some snippets of their music, and the ‘odd’ free track…Right now they have a song called “My Favourite Time of the Year” that’s just awesome!  You can also follow them on twitter, so you can be sure you don’t miss a show in your area!  (I’m still holding out for a North Bay date).

he Trench Town Oddities are a 5-piece band consisting of Sean Harley(Lead Vocals, Acoustic Guitar), Steve R. Never one to remain idle, front man Sean Harley – a staple on the Canadian indie music scene who past musical experiences include sharing the stage with some of North America’s biggest acts (Sum41, April Wine, Headstones, Kim Mitchell, Glass Tiger, ect), recording in world class studios (Metalworks, Phase One, Distortion), not to mention having music picked up by various TV Shows (Witchblade), extreme sports videos (Snowmobiling Canada), and TV Appearances (Tom Green) – decided to start the Trench Town Oddities as way to get together with some musical buddies and have fun playing music without the pressures associated with trying to be the next big thing. Guitarist Steve R. was first on-board after the duo bumped into each other at a local music store. Having known Steve for a number of years but never having a chance to play together, Sean jumped at the opportunity to recruit such an exception guitarist. Next came Randy who previously played with Sean in a band called the Dub Dogz. Nick Kalil was next, who many not have been the first bassist for the Oddities but most definitely will be the last. Final, Todd Harrington was brought in to keep it solid on the drums.

So there you have it, the rules are simply… when at a Trench Town Oddities show have fun… and be prepared to party ’til the wee hours or the morning!

There’s just something about a song in a different language that speaks to me. I find myself enticed by the enigmas in the unknown words and mysterious sounds, concentrating on the tones and inflections of the voices to guess the meaning and messages. Match these beguiling lyrics with incredibly well-written tunes, and you have songs I listen to over and over again, lost in the music and my own thoughts.

This is where Matt Stern comes in. A native Montrealer, Matt uses the musical and linguistic influences of his world travels (which include France, Germany, Japan, China, and Nicaragua among others) to craft a sound that is unique and something oh-so-easy to fall in love with!

My name is Desirée Ossandon (although some of you might also know me as Desirée O or D. Cole Ossandon). Whatever I happen to be called at the moment, I’m now going to be writing music posts for IndieNorth.

I’m really excited about this and want to say thanks to the always awesome Beth!

For my first post, I’d like to introduce you to the wonderful Darrelle London.

Darrelle’s debut full-length album Edible Word Parade is a collection of nine songs that you can’t help but sing along to …and yes, I am singing along to them right now as I’m writing this

With a voice that is lilting and lovely, you might expect equally sweet lyrics from this classically trained singer-songwriter. But Darrelle uses each word to take listeners to places that are more complex than first expected.

With lines like, “It takes me pretty long to trust you, not you, just anyone” and “I’m jealous too, how couldn’t I be”, Darrelle shows a maturity that contradicts and plays off her sweet and youthful sound. Or my favourite, “It’s not my preference to play these games, but I can’t help that I’m good at them.” Yeah, that’s right!

And if you were wondering if Darrelle is in fact a truly Canadian girl – straight from her website:
